CONCLUSION

Research in the area of psychotherapy and in the more general area of personality theory has been criticized for its preponderance of theory without experimental validation. In the current work, a system of hypotheses was established in the attempt to put forward a consistent explanation of the schizophrenic process. It is suggested that the concepts employed in this system lend themselves to operational definition and to experimental investigation in a treatment situation for these patients. It is only with this type of effort that we can evaluate psychotherapy for schizophrenia on a sound scientific basis. Despite the problems involved in isolating the relevant variables and in making objective measurements of the patient-therapist interaction, the author feels this approach is a useful point of departure for more rigorous experimental studies of schizophrenia. If this discussion stimulates more precise research into the psychodynamics of schizophrenia or assists the therapist in working with patients suffering from this disorder, its major purpose will have been served.

Finally, I do not believe, despite all of the problems involved in treating schizophrenics with psychotherapy, that the condition of schizophrenia is incurable. I feel that in certain instances, with the proper kind of treatment, dramatic and powerful results can be achieved. From a theoretical standpoint, working with these patients adds vastly to a clinician’s knowledge of symbolism, theory, and research about the self-mothering process. It is valuable as a research tool and provides an unusual opportunity for training and experience. Though costly in terms of time and effort, it is helpful even if it benefits a small number of patients.
